I don’t mean to be rude, but Čazma didn’t do anything special for me. I just knew Čazma as a small little town located 60 kilometers away from Zagreb, and that’s it. But, while reading more, I found it more interesting than I thought. There were some elements that I find interesting in small places, especially for this project.
There were remains of the medieval fortress, a huge beautiful church, and street art. I was intrigued. One thing was a bit weird. I know there is more of Čazma than I visited, but there were almost no people! I visited Čazma in November, and it felt like it was the middle of summer – completely empty!

Either way, I liked this small place. I would like to visit it during some kind of town celebration when people are on the streets. Who knows, maybe one day!
What does the internet say about Čazma?
Čazma, a town located in central Croatia, is nestled in the scenic Bjelovar-Bilogora County, approximately 60 kilometers southeast of Zagreb. This charming town, situated at the foothills of Moslavačka gora, is beautified by the Česma River flowing through it, adding to its picturesque rural setting.
The town’s historical roots can be traced back to 1226, with the establishment of a parish by Bishop Stjepan II Babonić. It holds an earlier mention as a possession of the Zagreb bishops in a document related to the founding of the Zagreb Diocese in 1094. Under the rule of the bishops, Čazma flourished, attracting various religious orders and evolving into a center for literacy and culture.
Throughout history, Čazma has been strategically significant, notably as a part of ‘Koloman’s Roads’ which connected northern and southern Croatia. The town underwent several transformations, especially during the Ottoman rule and the subsequent period of liberation. After liberation, Croatian noble Toma Erdödy played a crucial role in the revitalization of Čazma, promoting resettlement and contributing to its redevelopment.

In contemporary times, Čazma is a harmonious blend of small enterprises and agriculture, with ‘Čazmatrans’ being a notable local company. Despite the march of modernity, Čazma retains its quaint and historical charm, offering visitors a unique window into Croatia’s diverse and rich past.
Today, Čazma continues to thrive as a small but vibrant community. Its cultural heritage is reflected in well-preserved historical buildings, traditional events, and local customs that have been passed down through generations. The town’s proximity to Zagreb also makes it an accessible destination for those seeking to explore the rural beauty and historical depth of Croatia.

With its peaceful atmosphere, historical significance, and beautiful natural surroundings, Čazma represents a blend of Croatia’s rural charm and historical richness, making it a worthwhile destination for both history enthusiasts and those seeking a serene getaway.
