Exploring Kršan Old Town: History, Portraits, and Stone Courtyards in Istria

Date:

Tucked away in the eastern part of Istria, Kršan is one of those places that doesn’t scream for attention—but quietly impresses you if you take the time to walk through it. During my visit on October 15th, 2024, I wandered into a corner of the old town that perfectly summed up the vibe of the place: a blend of rugged medieval stonework, fading history, and surprising artistic touches.

This photo captures a section of Kršan’s old town courtyard featuring weathered stone walls, a rusted old well, and a modern portrait mounted on one of the walls. The image of a young woman in traditional clothing stands out with its vibrant colors, contrasting with the muted tones of the surrounding architecture. The combination of old and new here is visually striking—it’s one of those frames that stops you mid-step because it tells more than one story at once. You’ve got texture, history, and identity, all in one shot.

Kršan’s history goes back to medieval times, and the old town still retains that fortress-like layout. The town’s name comes from the word “krš” (meaning rock or stone), and it’s easy to see why—that raw stonework is everywhere. Over the last few years, Kršan has become more active in preserving and promoting its heritage, including organizing cultural events and outdoor exhibitions like the portrait seen in this photo. These efforts bring a modern layer to the historical setting, allowing visitors to engage with the town’s past and present in unexpected ways.

Kršan might be small, but it’s full of interesting photo opportunities for travelers who like to slow down and explore off the main tourist track. If you’re into quiet places with strong visual character, this one should be on your list.
