Novi Vinodolski, a jewel on the Adriatic Sea, captivates visitors with its blend of rich history and vibrant tourism. Located just south of Crikvenica and about 42km southeast of Rijeka, this picturesque town lies at the heart of the Northern Croatian Littoral, offering breathtaking views and a serene coastal ambiance.
The area around Novi Vinodolski has been populated since prehistoric times, with numerous Roman artifacts and remains such as the Lopsica fortress testifying to its ancient past. However, it was in the 13th century, when the area became a property of the Frankopan family, that Novi Vinodolski began to shape its significant historical and cultural identity. The town is also renowned for the Law Codex of Vinodol, one of the most valuable legacies from this period, which outlines one of the earliest legal documents in Europe.
Today, Novi Vinodolski is a thriving tourist center with a population of 4,328 as of 2021. The town's economy is predominantly driven by tourism, thanks to its scenic location and absence of heavy industry. The Novi Vinodolski Riviera, with its unspoiled landscapes and clear waters, makes it an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil yet engaging getaway.
The heart and soul of Novi Vinodolski are embodied in its historical landmarks and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the remnants of a Paulist monastery, the robust Frankopan fortress and castle, and a variety of churches including the cathedral, Trinity Church, and Saint Marinus Church on its namesake island. The town’s rich history is further celebrated in the Homeland museum and gallery, the historic core, and the house of the Mažuranić brothers, which includes a library founded in 1845.
Preserving its cultural roots, Novi Vinodolski also maintains a vibrant connection to its folklore, offering a genuine experience of local traditions and histories. For those enchanted by the allure of history mingled with the beauty of the Adriatic, Novi Vinodolski offers an unforgettable journey through time and culture.
