Walking Through History: Zadar’s Bell Tower and Spring Streets

Date:

Exploring a city on foot always gives me a better sense of its rhythm. Zadar is no different. On a hot spring day, I found myself wandering through the pedestrian-friendly streets of the peninsula, soaking up a mix of old charm and lively energy. This photo was taken on May 6th, 2024, during one of those aimless walks that end up being the most rewarding.

Right in the center of the frame is the iconic bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Anastasia. Its clean lines and Romanesque style stand out beautifully against the surrounding post-war architecture. I liked how the modern storefronts and historic landmarks casually coexist — it says a lot about how layered this city really is.

The bell tower is part of Zadar’s rich religious and architectural history. The cathedral itself is the largest in Dalmatia, and the tower offers panoramic views over the city and the sea — definitely worth the climb if you’re up for it. Just walking through this part of town gives you an unfiltered look at the mix of everyday life, tourism, and deep-rooted heritage.

If you’re looking to capture Zadar’s vibe through photography, a walk like this is a great place to start. There’s history in the details, and it doesn’t take long before you stumble across something camera-worthy around every corner.
