Capturing Dubrovnik from Above: A Unique View from the Srđ Cable Car

Date:

A Different Perspective on Dubrovnik’s Old Town

If you’ve ever visited Dubrovnik, chances are you’ve walked its famous stone streets or circled the ancient city walls. But here’s a tip—some of the best views aren’t found down below. During a hot summer afternoon in August 2024, I jumped on the cable car to Srđ mountain and caught this fun moment from the ride: a snapshot through the glass, hats and smartphones framing the iconic Old Town from above.

This photo was taken mid-ride in the Dubrovnik Cable Car, the one that takes you from the city up to Mount Srđ in just a few minutes. What makes this image special is the contrast—between modern-day tourism and centuries-old history. You see the phones ready to snap, but also the tightly packed orange rooftops that define Dubrovnik’s look. It’s one of those moments where everything overlaps: old and new, locals and visitors, sea and stone.

Why This View Stands Out

Photos from Srđ are often clean, postcard-perfect panoramas. But this one adds that human element—real people experiencing the view in real time. The hats suggest peak summer, and the mobile screens mirror what everyone comes to see: that iconic bird’s-eye view of Dubrovnik. You can spot key landmarks like the cathedral dome, the city walls, and the packed parking lot just outside the gates. It’s busy, vibrant, and very Dubrovnik.

A Bit of Background

Dubrovnik’s cable car was originally built in 1969 but was destroyed during the war in the early 1990s. It reopened in 2010, and since then, it’s become a must-do for visitors looking to catch a panoramic look at the city. Srđ Mountain itself also has historical significance—it was a defensive stronghold during the Homeland War and is home to the Fort Imperial museum.
