One of the best parts about photographing old towns in Croatia is that you never really know what you’ll find around the next corner. That was definitely the case while exploring Labin’s old town on October 15th, 2024. I turned into this narrow alley and instantly had to stop—it was one of those naturally framed, perfectly lit streets that just begged to be photographed.
This photo shows a classic Istrian alley in the heart of old town Labin, with colorful facades packed tightly on both sides. From earthy reds and yellows to stone textures and old wooden shutters, everything here feels authentic and lived-in. The gentle curve of the stone path and the way the buildings lean in on you add to the charm. It’s a quiet moment that gives you a real sense of what it’s like to walk through these old streets—no crowds, no big landmarks—just the atmosphere of a place that’s been evolving for centuries.
Labin sits on a hill in eastern Istria and has roots stretching back to Roman times. Its old town is a maze of narrow passages, staircases, and pastel buildings, often hiding small galleries, artisan shops, or cafés. While the town is known for its mining history and Baroque architecture, its everyday scenes—like this alley—are just as powerful in telling the story of local life. The blend of medieval structure and modern detail (check the satellite dishes and quirky shutters) makes it a rewarding location for street and travel photography.
If you’re traveling through Istria and enjoy slow wandering with a camera in hand, Labin is worth your time. The streets here are full of color, angles, and textures just waiting to be captured.
