When I was planning my visit to Kvarner, I considered the option of visiting Kraljevica. While planning, I was delighted to learn that the city of Kraljevica houses two castles. Naturally, I immediately marked two locations as must-visit spots.
The first castle I visited was the Nova Kraljevica Castle. Since I started working in this field, I’ve often come across old castles, but rarely are they well-preserved. This is one of those examples. The entire castle seems as if it has been recently renovated, which was confirmed by people working in some of the associations located within the castle. The castle is part of the cultural route “Frankopan Routes”, and this castle is considered the scene of the rise and fall of the Zrinski Frankopan family, who contemplated their political ideas and plans in Kraljevica. About twenty years after its construction, at the peak of the family’s power, the castle was the origin of the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy against the Habsburg absolutist rule. After the downfall and execution of the conspirators Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan, the castle witnessed the end of two families and was plundered and devastated. Today, in the process of restoration, it conveys the spirit of the Frankopans, and it was here that the “Frankopan Routes” cultural route project was conceived and its first visitor center opened. I have just visited the visitor center and it really is a place, that is, a source of a vast amount of information, with friendly staff ready to help explain all elements of the center and clarify the history of this castle.

This castle is definitely a hit, I am very glad it was on my route, and I am confident that I will return someday.
Now, let’s see what the internet has to say about the Castle Nova Kraljevica.
Nestled in the charming town of Kraljevica, the Nova Kraljevica Castle, also revered as Frankopan Castle, stands as a beacon of Croatian cultural heritage. This grand castle, dating back to the mid-17th century, serves as both a historical site and a gateway to the rich history of the Frankopan and Zrinski families.
Constructed in 1651 under the patronage of Petar IV. Zrinski, the architecture of Nova Kraljevica Castle is a testament to the exquisite Venetian influence of the era. The castle’s layout features a large rectangular complex, adorned with four robust towers at each corner, embodying the late renaissance style with lavish decorations and residential elegance.

Nova Kraljevica Castle is more than just a historical monument; it is a vibrant cultural hub. The western tower houses a visitor’s centre, complete with a marble fireplace dating back to the time of Katarina Frankopan, offering a cozy yet regal backdrop for various cultural activities. Storytelling sessions and costume interpretations bring the castle’s illustrious past to life, engaging visitors in the rich tapestry of Croatian history.
Adding to the immersive experience is the interactive exhibition located in the adjoining hall. Here, visitors can delve deeper into the legacy of the Frankopan family through engaging displays and narratives. One of the highlights for guests is the “Frankopan’s Fortune-Teller” interactive game, where they can receive a personalized prophecy, adding a touch of mystique to their visit. Nova Kraljevica Castle is not just a place to visit but a journey through time, offering insights into the material and spiritual heritage that shaped this region of Croatia. It invites history enthusiasts, families, and travelers from around the world to explore its majestic halls and discover the stories etched within its walls.
