Visiting Šibenik for the first time was a dream come true, especially given my passion for old towns, castles, and fortresses. Arriving early in the city, I eagerly started my exploration with the three iconic fortresses: Barone, St. John’s, and St. Michael’s. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, capturing the beauty and grandeur of these fortresses through countless photos. Šibenik, with its blend of historical charm and impressive fortifications, felt like a place made just for me.

Now, what the Internet says about this place?

The historic city of Šibenik, Croatia, is famous for its impressive fortifications, showcasing its strategic importance over the years. Three fortresses stand out: Barone, St. John’s, and St. Michael’s, each with its own unique story and charm.

Barone Fortress: The Sentinel on the Hill

Barone Fortress, also known as Šubićevac Fortress, sits atop Vidakuša hill and dates back to 1646. Built during the Cretan War, it was essential for defending the city against the Ottomans. Named after Baron Christoph von Degenfeld, the citizens of Šibenik constructed it in an amazing 58 days without Venetian funds. Today, Barone Fortress is a historical site and a cultural venue, featuring a high-tech museum that uses augmented reality to depict the 1647 battle.

St. John’s Fortress: The Stronghold of Šibenik

St. John’s Fortress, also known as Tanaja, is perched on a hill north of Šibenik’s historical center. Built in the same year as Barone, it’s named after a medieval church dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It played a key role in defending against Ottoman sieges in 1646 and 1647. Designed by Genoese military engineer Father Antonio Leni, it was the most modern and strongest fortification of its time. Recently renovated, it now offers a mix of history and amazing panoramic views.

St. Michael’s Fortress: The Birthplace of Šibenik

St. Michael’s Fortress is the oldest and most significant of Šibenik’s fortresses. Located on a steep hill above the city, it has been a strategic point since the Iron Age. Named after the oldest church in Šibenik, it’s believed to be where the city was first mentioned in a charter signed by King Peter Krešimir IV in 1066. After extensive renovations, St. Michael’s Fortress now hosts concerts and events, offering stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the entire city.

Conclusion

Barone, St. John’s, and St. Michael’s Fortresses are more than just historic structures; they are the keepers of Šibenik’s rich past. These fortresses have seen the city evolve from a medieval stronghold to a modern tourist hotspot. Visitors can dive into the rich history, marvel at the architecture, and feel the indomitable spirit of Šibenik.
