Hidden away in the small town of Severin na Kupi, this castle scene grabbed my attention during a crisp autumn visit. The soft light of late November, paired with the earthy palette of golden leaves and ivy-covered stone, made for a perfect photo stop. There’s a sense of peaceful abandonment here — like time paused for just a moment.
This photo shows one of the round towers of Severin na Kupi Castle, also known as the Zrinski-Frankopan Castle. The structure, now weathered and partially swallowed by vegetation, still stands with character. Ivy climbs up its walls like a natural curtain, while broken windows and a quiet courtyard hint at its long, layered history. It’s the kind of place that sparks imagination, especially for someone who loves photographing forgotten corners of Croatia.
Built in the 16th century by the noble Frankopan and later Zrinski families, the castle once stood guard over the Kupa River and the nearby trade routes. It played a key role in regional defense and governance, though today it sits mostly in silence — visited occasionally by travelers curious about its past. It’s not polished or heavily promoted, but that’s part of what makes it interesting.
If places like this catch your eye too, there’s more where that came from.
