It was the first time I have visited both the Old Town Veliki Kalnik and Old Town Novigrad na Dobri, and both of those places amazed me, especially the Old Town Veliki Kalnik. They are amazing pieces of architectural history that need to be preserved for future generations and for all the history geeks out there.
The Old Town of Veliki Kalnik and the Old Town of Novigrad na Dobri share several historical and architectural similarities.
Veliki Kalnik, situated on the Kalnik mountain near the village of Kalnik, is a complex of fortifications dating back to the 12th century. This area has been inhabited since prehistoric and Roman times. The fort was first mentioned in 1243, highlighting its importance in the fight against the Tatars. King Bela IV famously took refuge here, and the fort played a significant role in resisting Tatar invasions. The locals, known as plum growers, supported the king during this time. Much of the former fort has been preserved and is now a popular destination for mountaineers and excursionists, offering stunning views of the surrounding areas. An when I say stunning views, I really mean it!

In contrast, Novigrad na Dobri, nestled near Karlovac in the municipality of Netretić, unfolds its story amidst green hills above the river Dobra. Though its origins are shrouded in mystery, estimated around 1193, it rose to prominence under the ownership of the Frankopan princes of Krk in the 15th century. The town, once a bustling center walked by Croatian nobles and knights, was transformed into a baroque noble castle over the centuries. It also served as a temporary abode for Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg. However, the turmoil of World War II left it in ruins, only to be revived later through restoration efforts. Both locations, therefore, represent the rich and layered history of Croatia, with their ancient fortifications and strategic importance in historical conflicts. They attract visitors interested in history, architecture, and the natural beauty of their settings.
