Returning to Veliki Tabor after so many years brought back more memories than I expected. The last time I was here, I was just a kid on a school trip, mostly excited about lunch and playing outside. But this time, walking through the same arched corridors and quiet courtyard with a camera in hand, I could actually take in just how unique this place is.
This photo shows the inner courtyard of the castle, with its two levels of arcades, supported by stone columns, and a few historical props like a wooden cart tucked in a corner. The architecture is simple but striking, especially when you imagine how long this place has been standing. There’s a quiet atmosphere here, as if the walls are used to watching time pass slowly.
Veliki Tabor is one of the best-preserved late medieval and Renaissance castles in Croatia. Located in the Zagorje region, it dates back to the 15th century and has gone through several renovations over the years. It’s believed to have once been owned by the noble Ratkaj family. Today, the castle serves as a museum, offering exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.
If you’re into castles, history, or just wandering through photogenic spaces with a camera, Veliki Tabor delivers. For more visuals from this visit and others around Croatia, head over to the Explore page and don’t forget to follow along on Instagram at @croatia_captured.
