I think that I have passed by the city of Senj several times in my life, but I never stopped to walk through the city streets. When I was planning a tour of what I called the southern Kvarner, it seemed logical to include Senj on the list. Senj is a city of enormous and important history, and as such, it is full of interesting architecture, which is always attractive and almost mandatory when I make a list of locations to visit. After touring the narrow city core and parts of the old town, I headed towards the Nehaj Fortress. I was sorry that it was closed, but I took the opportunity to take several photos of the panorama of Senj and the Nehaj Fortress itself. It was definitely worth it.

Now, let’s see what the internet has to say about Senj.
Located in the scenic foothills of the Mala Kapela and Velebit mountains, Senj is a historic town that boasts a rich history and stunning natural landscapes. This ancient town, one of the oldest in the northern Adriatic, traces its origins back more than 3000 years, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Croatia’s past.
Senj’s most iconic landmark is the imposing Nehaj Fortress, completed in 1558. This formidable structure stands as a symbol of Senj’s historical military significance and its role as a refuge for the Uskoks—Christian warriors who defended the Habsburg borderlands from Ottoman invasions. The fortress, perched atop a hill, offers panoramic views of the town and the Adriatic Sea, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

With a population of 5,973 as of 2021, Senj maintains a quaint, welcoming atmosphere that enchants visitors. The town is particularly popular during the summer months, when tourists flock to enjoy its beautiful beaches and the mild Mediterranean climate. The city beach Skver is a favorite spot, known for its blend of gravel and concrete shores, ideal for sunbathing and water sports.
Beyond the beach, Senj offers access to several natural attractions, including the nearby Northern Velebit National Park. This park is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, featuring diverse flora and fauna and spectacular landscapes that showcase the beauty of Croatia’s mountainous terrain. Visitors can also relax in the park Nehaj, a serene green space that surrounds the fortress, providing a perfect setting for a leisurely afternoon picnic or a stroll. Senj’s blend of historical sites, cultural heritage, and natural beauty makes it an appealing destination for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation on Croatia’s stunning Adriatic coast.
