My two-day trip through Slavonija brought me to the town of Vinkovci—a place I hadn’t explored much before. Wandering through its center, this statue caught my eye. It’s powerful, standing firm under the blue sky, with the town’s architectural mix of history and pastel colors behind it.
The bronze figure in the photo represents a hero from the region’s past, a common feature in many Croatian towns. It’s not just about honoring history—it’s also about giving these public spaces a sense of character. Behind the statue is the baroque Church of Saints Eusebius and Polion, with its distinctive clock tower, and part of Vinkovci’s pastel-hued town hall peeking out on the right.
Vinkovci is one of the oldest towns in Europe, with a history stretching back over 8,000 years. It’s often overlooked in favor of larger Slavonian cities, but I found its quiet streets and historic core to be perfect for slower, more deliberate photography.
If you’re into capturing cities that blend everyday life with historical depth, I’d say Vinkovci deserves a stop. To see more photos from this visit and the rest of Slavonija, check out the Explore page, and follow along on Instagram at @croatia_captured.
