Završje, Istria: Discover the Medieval Village with Croatia’s Leaning Tower

Date:

Perched 240 meters above the Mirna river valley in northern Istria, Završje is one of those places that quietly takes your breath away. With only around 40 inhabitants, ivy-covered stone houses, and panoramic views that stretch across rolling hills, this medieval village feels like a well-kept secret—and that’s exactly its charm.

Echoes of the Past

Završje’s layered history dates back to prehistoric times, and its past is reflected in every stone and corner. Known once as Piemonte d’Istria, it has seen Roman, Venetian, and Habsburg rule, each era leaving its mark. The 11th-century castle ruins and the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Holy Crown are central to its story. The church’s 22-meter bell tower, leaning 40 centimeters to the north, adds a quirky twist—earning it the title of Završje’s leaning tower.

Wander the cobblestone streets and you’ll pass remnants of the town’s double defensive walls, with the south gate dating back to the 12th century. This place doesn’t just preserve history—it lives in it.

Atmosphere and Authenticity

Time seems to move differently here. Some homes are abandoned and overrun with ivy, adding a romantic, almost otherworldly feel to the village. It’s not staged or overly restored—Završje wears its history naturally and beautifully.

The church once held a 15th-century silver chalice, now displayed in the Louvre, hinting at the village’s once-significant role in the region.

For those drawn to nature, Završje rewards with sweeping views of the Mirna valley and nearby Motovun. The famous Parenzana trail, a converted historic railway route, passes nearby and is perfect for hiking or cycling through Istria’s pastoral scenery.

Završje is a model of slow travel, offering not just sights but stories. Recent EU-funded restoration projects have brought thoughtful signage in Croatian, Italian, and English—helping visitors connect more deeply with the village’s legacy.

Getting There

The best way to reach Završje is by car. The scenic drives from Grožnjan or Oprtalj offer glimpses of the lush Istrian interior and heighten the feeling of arriving somewhere special and untouched.

If you’re looking to step away from the rush and experience Istria in its most raw, poetic form, Završje is your next stop. Quiet, soulful, and timeless—this is one village that stays with you long after you leave.
